They all laughed and then Prince Igor turned round and held up his hand to ask for silence.
It was amazing that the crowd obeyed him at once and for a moment there was not a sound to be heard except for a dog barking some distance away.
âMy people,â Prince Igor began. âI have the great privilege and honour to present to you the most beautiful and most wonderful Princess in the whole of the Balkans, who with the kindness and graciousness of a warm heart has said that she will become my wife.â
He made a gesture with his hand before continuing,
âThat she will join with me in making this country of great influence and security, which will ensure that we will no longer be afraid of the future as we have been in the past.â
The people were listening to him with an almost super-human silence.
As they then cheered, he took Laviniaâs hands and said,
âAllow me to present to you all Princess Lavinia of Tamrush.â
There was no chance of him saying more as a huge roar went up from the crowd.
It was followed by cheer after cheer and those who could not cheer clapped their hands and waved them. Once again there were flowers flying through the air which now fell onto the platform.
Then in a voice that only she could hear Prince Igor asked her,
âAre you prepared to say anything to them?â
âShall I just thank them?â Lavinia suggested.
âThat will be splendid,â he answered.
He held up his hand and those in attendance on him did the same. The crowd which was cheering and shouting fell silent.
Then Prince Igor said,
âHer Royal Highness wants to thank you for your welcome.â
He released Laviniaâs hand as he spoke and stepped back so that she was alone in front of the stage.
In a strong voice that she hoped would carry to the far end of the crowd, Lavinia began,
âThank you, thank you for this welcome and will you all please pray that I am bringing peace and happiness to this marvellous City and your beautiful country.â
As she finished, she bowed to the people and then turning round she curtseyed to Prince Igor.
Once again he kissed her hand.
Then, as it was impossible to speak for the noise of the cheering, he drew Lavinia to the other side of the stage where his open carriage was waiting and then helped her into it.
Although it was difficult for the horses to move, they gradually left the Square.
The huge crowd was still cheering and waving their hands to which Lavinia and Prince Igor responded.
It took them some little time to reach the long road leading away from the Square and it was only when they were some distance from the Square that they could speak to each other.
âYou came at exactly the right moment, as I hoped you would,â Prince Igor said. âIt was so like your father to time it so that the populace did not get bored with waiting for you.â
âPapa did not tell me you were planning
